My name is Rene G. Olivo and I am 72 years old. I was born in Harlingen, Texas on February 16, 1936. My wife's name is Elisa and all of our kids are grown. Some live in California and some live in Arizona. I graduated from Harlingen High School in 1955 and attended a junior college for one year. Soon after my wife and I married and I quit the junior college to support my family.
Ruidoso Downs has been my home since I retired in June of 1994 from the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority where I worked for 31 years. I was a supervisor for the Communications Department and supervised thirty-two employees
I was awarded a "Certificate of Achievement" from the Local Government Leadership Program and also received a certificate for completing the "Governance Program" of the Municipal Officials Leadership Institute. I am the first council member of the City of Ruidoso Downs to accomplish this.
I have been a member of the Ruidoso Downs Auxiliary Board since 1995 and was a volunteer for the Ruidoso Downs Fire Department for four years. I am a past member of the Lincoln County D.W.I. Program. Currently I am a member of the Board of Directors for the Lincoln County Juvenile Justice Board. I also enjoy my time with friends in the Ruidoso Downs Boot Scootin' Seniors Line Dancing Club.
On March 8, 2002 I was elected to the City Council of Ruidoso Downs for a four-year term. In March of 2006 I was defeated by six votes and my position went to Dean Holman. I was re-elected to the City Council in March of 2008.
I look forward to providing a better work environment for our employees, cut run away spending, and working to make a safe and clean community so that we have a better place to live. I encourage residents of our city to attend the City Council meetings. With your involvement we can make positive changes and be proud of Ruidoso Downs.
