The Ruidoso Downs Police Department has been in existence for many years . In the very early days the Ruidoso Downs Police Department was staffed by one officer who was better known as the (Town Marshal). For many of the early years, the town marshal and the NM State Police were the main law enforcement officials in Ruidoso Downs.

From the one person Department of then, the Department has evolved into one with a staff 10 full time officers and 8 non-commissioned employees.

The Police Department is led by the Police Chief, Alfred Ortiz. His responsibilities include the administration of the department which encompasses the Police, Communications, and Animal Control Departments and the management of the Police Department's Mission Statement.
